What to pack for Fernando de Noronha
By Danilo Dirê · Updated 2026 · 5 min read

You've got your flight and your inn — now the suitcase. Noronha is a destination of nature, open sea and strong sun, so packing right makes a difference in comfort (and protection) during your trip.
This is the checklist from someone who lives on the island, so you don't forget anything.
Clothes
Clothes and beach
- Light, comfortable clothes (you can leave the fancy stuff at home).
- Plenty of swimwear.
- UV shirt / rash guard for protection.
- Flip-flops, comfortable sneakers and a pair of water shoes (great for rocky-bottom beaches).
- A pair of sneakers with good grip for the trails — some sections get slippery in the rainy season.
- Sarong and a quick-dry towel.
- A nicer outfit for a dinner out.
Protection
Sun protection and insect repellent (essential in Noronha)
The sun in Noronha is intense and there's little shade on the beaches, so protection is a must. And bring repellent: there's a local biting midge, the maroim, that tends to bother people.
- Sunscreen (biodegradable if possible).
- Cap or hat.
- Sunglasses.
- Insect repellent.
- Sunscreen top-ups throughout the day.
- Moisturizer — sun, salt and wind dry out the skin.
- Motion-sickness medicine, if you tend to get seasick on boat tours.
In some spots, like the Atalaia natural pool, sunscreen is banned to protect the corals — so physical protection (UV shirt, hat and sunglasses) becomes even more important.
For the sea
Gear for the sea
A big part of what makes Noronha special is underwater. You can bring your own snorkel from home or rent everything on the island, without carrying any weight.
- Mask and snorkel.
- Fins.
- Buoyancy vest (great for the natural pools).
- Waterproof camera or GoPro to record it all.
EmNoronha rents snorkel, mask, fins, vest and GoPro — so you don't need to bring anything from home.
Documents and cash
Documents and cash
- Official photo ID.
- Proof of payment for the Environmental Preservation Fee (TPA) and the National Park ticket.
- Some cash — internet on the island is spotty and you can't always pay by card or Pix.
Sustainability
Noronha is Plastic Zero
Taking care of this paradise is part of the experience. Noronha follows a Plastic Zero policy: single-use items (bags, cups and cutlery) and bottles smaller than 500 ml are not allowed on the island.
- Bring a reusable bottle — you can refill it at several points in the park.
- Bring an eco bag or backpack — shops don't provide plastic bags.
- Avoid disposables and help keep the island clean.
Anyone arriving with plastic bags is approached at the airport by the environmental team — so come prepared.

Take Noronha with you
Every trip to Noronha deserves a keepsake to call your own. At our shop in the Porto de Santo Antônio you'll find beachwear, UV shirts, caps, sunglasses and souvenirs — to hold on to the memory of the island or to gift someone you love. And if you want to enjoy the sea without carrying any weight, we also rent snorkel, mask, fins, vest and GoPro on the spot. It's the right place to sort out protection for your tours and the memory of your trip.
